Of all the world beaches, we feel justified in telling you that Byron Bay beaches rank among the top beaches of the world but we do have to admit there are some amazing beaches out there.

So where are the best beaches of the world?

How long is a piece of string. It's a very subjective question, a dangerous subject and dependent on personal preferences.

To a lot of people, the idea of a good beach is miles of clean white sand and not a soul in sight. Other factors are important and different people rank different qualities depending on their own personal circumstances.

There is also the danger of turning what was once a perfect beach into a nightmare by talking it up too much and making it too popular. Think Ibiza, Butlins or Key West to name but a few. All beautiful places but would they be even better if less people knew about them and made use of them?

There are certain elements about a good beach which are pretty much universal, and we can't help mentioning just a few of our favourites. But everyone needs to not just take our word for it. One of the joys of life is finding that secret little spot that becomes precious and meaningful to you.

So what all contributes to making a good beach?

  • Sand - types and colour of sand
  • Open Ocean, Bay, Sea or Lake - can make all the difference
  • Seclusion, privacy
  • Access - carparks, disabled access, walking tracks
  • Facilities - toilets, barbeques, food, drinks, chair rental
  • Usage - dog friendly, families, teenagers
  • Perimeter - surrounded by palms, bushland, high-rise, cliffs
  • Sunsets or sunrise - north, south, east or west?
  • Water temperature
  • Safety - sharks, stingrays, jellyfish

    Some of our suggestions for the top beaches in the world may surprise you. Others less so. Take it all with a pinch of salt...water.
